Wat Than Namtok (Lang Heo) – Pak Chong

Wat Than Namtok (Lang Heo), also known as Wat Than Namtok Lang Heo, is a Buddhist temple in Pak Chong District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province, where religious architecture and natural scenery come together in an unusually picturesque setting. Away from the busier attractions of the Khao Yai area, the temple offers visitors an opportunity to experience a quieter side of Pak Chong, surrounded by forested hills, dramatic viewpoints and the sound of flowing water.

One of the most striking features is the large white Buddha image, known as Phra Metta Phupha Si Mongkhon, which stands overlooking the surrounding mountain landscape. The elevated position provides beautiful views across the hills, particularly in the early morning when mist sometimes settles over the valley, creating an atmospheric setting for photography.

Behind the temple lies the natural attraction that gives the site its name: Namtok Lang Heo (Lang Heo Waterfall). This unusual waterfall is fed by underground spring water that emerges from the forested hillside before cascading down a steep cliff. Thailand’s Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning describes it as a single-tier waterfall, approximately 80 metres high, and recognises it as a natural site worthy of conservation.

Visitors can enjoy the waterfall from the elevated viewpoint or follow the steps down towards the lower section. The descent offers a different perspective of the surrounding vegetation, rocky landscape and falling water. During and shortly after the rainy season, the waterfall is generally at its most impressive, while the cooler months can bring misty conditions that add another dimension to the scenery.

Photography Tips: Visit early in the morning to take advantage of softer light and the possibility of mist across the surrounding mountains. The large white Buddha image makes an excellent focal point against the landscape, while the elevated viewpoints provide opportunities for panoramic compositions. At the waterfall, try a slower shutter speed to capture the movement of the falling water. A tripod and neutral density filter can be useful in brighter conditions. Protect your camera from moisture and spray, especially near the waterfall. Take care when photographing from elevated walkways and cliffside viewpoints.

Recommended Visit Duration: Allow approximately 1–2 hours to explore the temple, photograph the Buddha image and viewpoints, and visit the waterfall. Allow additional time if you intend to walk down to the lower waterfall area. The steps can be steep and slippery, particularly after rainfall, so take your time on the descent and return climb.
